Celebrating World Gin Day: 5 Reasons to Fall Back in Love with Gin

World Gin Day – 14th June

There was a time when gin was known as Mother’s Ruin. Then came the wave of botanicals, the pink gin obsession, and the craft revival that changed the game. Whether you’re a die-hard Negroni fan or someone who still associates gin with G&Ts at garden parties, World Gin Day is the perfect excuse to revisit this timeless spirit—and maybe even find a new favourite.

What Is World Gin Day?

Founded in 2009, World Gin Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in June. What started as a small celebration in Birmingham has since evolved into a global toast to all things gin—from juniper-forward classics to creative new wave infusions.

It’s a chance to explore, sip, and learn about one of the world’s most versatile spirits. And at The Natural Philosopher, that’s exactly our kind of celebration.

5 Reasons to Reconnect with Gin

1. It’s the Most Flavourful Spirit in the Game

Unlike vodka, gin is all about flavour from the start. To legally be called gin, it must be flavoured with juniper—but that’s just the beginning. Gin can be made with all sorts of ingredients. Think coriander seed, angelica root, orris, citrus peels, cucumber, rose, cardamom, peppercorns, seaweed... the list is almost endless.

Each distillery creates a signature flavour blend, so there’s a gin out there for every palate—floral, spicy, citrusy, herbal, even savoury.

2. It’s the Backbone of Some of the Best Cocktails Ever Made

Martinis. Negronis. Gimlets. French 75s. Aviation.

Gin is the base spirit for some of the most iconic and enduring cocktails of all time.

Its dryness and complexity give structure to a drink without overpowering it. Whether you like your cocktails sharp, stirred, or sparkling, there’s a gin-based classic waiting for you.

3. It’s Wildly Adaptable

Gin’s versatility makes it a playground for bartenders and drinkers alike. With the diversity of the category, the possibilities are innumerable. The same cocktail made with two different gins will result in two different end products.

At The Natural Philosopher, we’re constantly experimenting with flavour pairings that bring out gin’s best angles—from cucumber cordials to beetroot distillates to sea buckthorn and lilac.

4. It Plays Well with Others (Especially Food)

Gin’s clean profile and herbal backbone make it a brilliant companion to food—especially lighter fare like seafood, fresh greens, or anything citrus-forward. It’s a natural partner for small plates, summer snacks, and yes, even your Sunday roast.

5. It’s Not Just for G&Ts Anymore

If your last gin memory involves a splash of Schweppes and a lemon wedge, it’s time for a glow-up. Today’s gins are more adventurous than ever, with unique distillates, small-batch runs, and local botanicals bringing fresh energy to the category.

Take Pass The Buck from our June menu—a fizzy, sea buckthorn-tinted highball with Hayman’s Gin and Muyu Chinotto, or Heart Of The Matter, where Hayman’s Gin is paired with Suze, cucumber, and beetroot distillate for something grounded, vegetal, and unexpectedly moreish.
